Alternative Thailand

What we came up with

It's hard not to picture idyllic turquoise waters and golden beaches when thinking of Thailand, but it can offer oh so much more than this simplified stereotype. Trek to hilltribe villages, learn the art of Hmong batik and get acquainted with the elephants of Khao Sok National Park on our Alternative Thailand holiday.

Itinerary Highlights

  • Bangkok - 3 Days
Bangkok is the metropolis capital of Thailand, and offers just about everything in terms of culture, shopping and general good vibes. The perfect antidote to the busy Bangkok day? A stay at the Metropolitan; a chic minimalist hotel with a spoiling COMO Shambhala Urban Retreat Spa. Tick of the highlights of the city, then step away from the tourist crowds, and explore the backwaters on our 'Unseen Klongs' tour.

  • Chiang Rai - 1 Day
The Golden Triangle is a sharp contrast to big city life, and the gentle ambience of the jungle and mountainous region of northern Thailand comes as a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. The Legend Hotel is nestled alongside the Mae Kok River in Chiang Rai, and from here guests can discover the tranquil surroundings of temples and jungle, exploring on foot.

  • The Golden Triangle - 2 Days
Literally translated as 'peaceful', Lanjia Lodge is set high in the hills of the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Burma converge. With a strong responsible travel ethos, Lanjia Lodge will appeal to those looking for somewhere to stay that feels fully at one with its natural surroundings. Explore the scenery by foot or raft, whilst also enjoying interactions with the local Hmong and Lahu people, perhaps even trying a hand at some traditional crafts.

  • Khao Sok National Park- 3 Days
Next stop: rainforest. Spend time exploring the rainforest on foot, kayaking through mangrove ecosystems and across the serene lake, or perhaps visiting a nearby elephant sanctuary for a close encounter with these majestic animals. Your comfortable private tent floats above the lake - the perfect spot to relax with a cool drink at the end of the day. Bliss.

  • Khao Lak - 4 Days
Idyllic, isolated and irreplaceable is The Sarojin Hotel, a retreat oozing elegance, and overlooking its sweeping private beach in Khao Lak. This really is the place to utilise the water activities on offer - snorkel and dive, kayak or take a leisurely cruise - there are plenty of options for the ocean lovers. Back on terra firma, relax in the spa, enjoy a Thai cookery class, hike, bike or climb. And the perfect end to the perfect trip? Enjoy a private dining experience at the Sarojin, whether choosing to be 'shipwrecked' on a private isle, or indulging in fine dining courses next to a cascading jungle waterfall.

A rough idea of price

A similar itinerary would cost in the region of £2,850 pounds which included all flights, hotels transfers and organised trips.

A note about prices

The guide prices shown are designed to provide you with a broad indication of how much to budget for your trip. Prices are generally for private arrangements using economy flights based on two people travelling together and sharing a room. There are a number of factors which will influence the price; these include the standard of accommodation, the season, the class of flights, the airline used and the level of private guiding versus shared excursions.
