Where to go in Romania

Bucharest is not Europe's most beautiful capital. There, we've said it, but the chances are you will fly in and/or out of here, so we recommend a whistlestop tour of the city centre, and staying in the lively Lipscani district. What lies beyond, however, is infinitely more interesting. As yet it's not easy to combine the two key areas, but heading north of the capital is Transylvania, home of mythical monsters, actual bears, wolves and lynx, and some of the most beautiful countryside and medieval architecture anywhere in Europe. For an even more time warp experience, head further north still to Maramures and Bucovina, famed for its painted monasteries. Way out east on the Romanian coast, the mighty River Danube finally completes its 1,777 journey from source to Black Sea, and the Danube Delta is one of the most beautiful places in the continent; home at the right time of year to millions of migratory birds:
