The hotel offers 19 rooms and suites spread throughout the property, with King or Queen sized beds (along with Wi-Fi and complimentary robes and slippers). The family room can accommodate two adults and two children and has a spacious living room bathed in natural light, while the double rooms are elegantly designed.

The Basilii restaurant - whose name plays homage to the previous villa owners - serves fine local Alentejo cuisine prepared daily by Chef Filipe Ramalho, who utilises the fresh ingredients and vegetables growing in the gardens.

The spa offers a variety of treatments including wine therapy massages (yes, you heard... wine!), sports massages and reflexology. The outdoor and indoor pools, Turkish bath and Jacuzzi also aid relaxation and add to the tranquil experience. To top off a relaxing stay the hotel has its own winery where you can indulge in wine tasting, learn about its production or get involved in a multitude of wine based activities.

The stables are a great source of entertainment for adults and children alike as you can enjoy riding Lustiano horses around the estate's arena or local surroundings. Little guests can help feed and groom them, too. For the culture vultures the nearby village of Monforte has wonderful old castle ruins and the local historical churches are also well worth exploring.

Why we love it

The hotel offers beginner riding lessons for all you budding riders desperate to gallop through the vineyards chasing the setting sun… maybe that's more for the advanced rider, but you've got to start somewhere!

This truly original retreat is situated in 66 acres of fabulous Alentejo countryside, and combines old school Portuguese vineyards with a 21st century design hotel.

Cork might not be the most obvious building material for a hotel but this is Alentejo after all, and it turns out that cork is not only a wonderfully effective insulator but its production is also about as sustainable as you can get, so the Ecorkhotel has the eco-friendly box very firmly ticked.

Malhadinha Nova

Malhadinha Nova

Malhadinha Nova is a quintessentially Portuguese homestead, which appears like something that has jumped out of a House and Garden magazine, with its light decors and rural countryside feel to it.

Sublime Comporta

Sublime Comporta

Sublime Comporta is a trendy country house retreat; it’s sleek, it's chic, plus the stunning beaches of Comporta are relatively unexplored and luxury hotels have yet to monopolise the area.
