L'And has 22 contemporary suites, created by Brazilian designer Marcio Kogan with bespoke wooden and slate furnishings, locally produced rugs, ipads and docks. The suites are split between Sky View and L'And View. Guests can sleep under the stars in the Sky View suites, with ever so comfy beds under skylights unveiling the nightly cosmos. The L'And View bedrooms, on the other hand, are more about creating a romantic and intimate setting with views of the lake and garden vines. The temperature in summer should remain gloriously in the 20s and 30s but at other times of year on chillier nights the suites all have private patios with open fires.

Foodies may be particularly enticed by the tasting menus of locally inspired dishes (the Portuguese octopus rice is pretty special), and their chef Miguel Laffon has bagged L'And the regions first Michelin star. And what better way to complement some fine dining than with some fine wining. As luck would have it, L'And is a wine resort and has a wine club, so we do suggest checking sobriety in at the front door.

Looking for relaxation? As well as the open fires and tranquil estate to meander around, L'And has a Vinotherapy spa offering a range of treatments using vineyard inspired products, and also an indoor heated pool. In the warmer months, take to the outdoor swimming pool with a scenic backdrop of mile upon mile of beautiful rolling countryside.

Why we love it

They do a 20 minute wine class each evening at around 6pm, complimentary for guests, where you can sample wines and have a mini tour of the onsite winery. Great for beginners, and you can personalise your own wine labels!

Ecorkhotel

Ecorkhotel

Cork might not be the most obvious building material for a hotel but this is Alentejo after all, and it turns out that cork is not only a wonderfully effective insulator but its production is also about as sustainable as you can get, so the Ecorkhotel has the eco-friendly box very firmly ticked.

Herdade do Touril

Herdade do Touril

Herdade de Touril is a charming 365-hectare estate on the Alentejo rugged coastline. The farmhouse property is modest in style and design, with a touch of rural Portuguese flavour, and prefect for those looking to escape the crowds.

Malhadinha Nova

Malhadinha Nova

Malhadinha Nova is a quintessentially Portuguese homestead, which appears like something that has jumped out of a House and Garden magazine, with its light decors and rural countryside feel to it.

Sublime Comporta

Sublime Comporta

Sublime Comporta is a trendy country house retreat; it’s sleek, it's chic, plus the stunning beaches of Comporta are relatively unexplored and luxury hotels have yet to monopolise the area.
