A Fly Drive in Norway

What we came up with

Few countries so close to the UK can lay claim to scenery as spectacular as Norway and the Fjords make for one of the best fly drive holidays around.

Itinerary Highlights

  • Storfjord - 2 days
Upon arrival into Alesund airport in the early afternoon, pick up your car for the next five days (which we will pre-arrange for you) along with an all-important sat-nav. Head out onto the open road in the direction of your first hotel, the wonderful Storfjord, located overlooking the fjord of the same name. If you want a taste of traditional Norwegian life, this is the place to be. It also just so happens to be our resident Norway-nut, Flora's, favourite hotel.

Spend this morning enjoying the great outdoors by heading out on a long walk in the forest surrounding the hotel, or take a bike if you'd like to explore further. In the afternoon, take a couple of kayaks out onto the water; there are few more relaxing ways to spend an afternoon than by paddling along the calm fjord. Early evening, we will arrange for you to head out with the hotel's chef so you can forage for ingredients, before dining on the fruits of your labour later on.
  • Øye - 1 day
Get up early and set off on a beautiful drive around the fjords towards the UNESCO heritage site of Geiranger, where you can stop for lunch. This is perhaps one of the most iconic fjords in Norway and, while it does attract the crowds, is well worth the visit; the views from the viewpoint are jaw-on-the-floor beautiful so make sure you have plenty of memory on your camera! In the afternoon continue your drive through the mountains towards your second hotel of the trip, Union Oye, which sits in a beautiful valley down by a fjord so make sure you get there in time for sunset. Dine in the hotel's restaurant and enjoy a nightcap by the fire whilst you hear about the hotel's fascinating history; it has played host to some of the world's most colourful characters, from Arthur Conan Doyle to Kaiser Wilhelm.
  • Alesund - 2 days
Spend your final full day in the fjords soaking up every last drop of the great outdoors; once again you can bike, walk or kayak around the fjords, taking in everything from beautiful waterfalls to the looming peaks that form a constant backdrop. In the afternoon head back to Alesund for your final night - we will organise a meal for you at one of the city's best restaurants. Your hotel for the night is the Brosundet.

Take advantage of your last morning in Norway by meandering around the beautiful streets and boutiques of Alesund, or visit the Art Nouveau Centre if you're in the mood for something cultural. You will then need to head back to the airport, drop off your car and catch your flight back to the UK.

A rough idea of price

A similar itinerary would cost from £1100 per person, which includes flights, car hire and the hotels. Please note that prices can fluctuate dependent upon season and international flight availability.

A note about prices

The guide prices shown are designed to provide you with a broad indication of how much to budget for your trip. Prices are generally for private arrangements using economy flights based on two people travelling together and sharing a room. There are a number of factors which will influence the price; these include the standard of accommodation, the season, the class of flights, the airline used and the level of private guiding versus shared excursions.
