What we came up with

Past and present, ancient and modern, Athens balances its historic landmarks with its artsy neighbourhoods and lively cafes. Travel from the oldest capital on earth to the diverse island of Crete, and discover everything from dramatic mountain scenery and secluded coves to ancient Minoan ruins and remote rural villages.

Itinerary Highlights

  • Athens - 2 days
The adventure begins in Athens, the cradle of Western Civilisation and a city overflowing with culture and ancient history. In the historic centre stands one of Athens's most distinguished 19th-century buildings - The Grand Bretagne Hotel. With views of the Acropolis, the regal Syntagma Square and the original Olympic Stadium, the hotel is perfectly positioned for exploring the highlights of Athens. Visit the ancient citadel of The Acropolis of Athens, which contains the symbolic Parthenon and the well-preserved Temple of Hepaestus. In the shadow of the Acropolis lies the historical neighbourhood of Plaka, where travellers wander through the picturesque labyrinthine streets, admire the neoclassical architecture, and discover treasures in the artisan shops. For spectacular views over the Attica basin and the Aegean, hike, or ride the funicular, up the Cretaceous limestone slopes of Mount Lycabettu.

  • Crete - 11 days
Overlooking Mirabello Bay, with stunning views of the Aegean Sea, lies the Domes of Elounda resort. Just a short boat trip from Spinalonga Island - an ancient fortress - Domes of Elounda is situated in an area both beautiful and fascinating. A trip to Spinalonga is a must, where visitors learn that the island was originally part of Crete, and was carved out of the mainland for defence purposes during the Venetian occupation. Potter around the charming village of Plaka, perched on the slopes of Mount Drapanokefala, and enjoy local dishes in a traditional tavern. Discover the Knossos Palace, which is Crete's largest Bronze Age archaeological site, and was once the capital of Minoan Crete. Visit the sunken city of Olous, or the coastal hillside town of Aghios Nikolaos.

Enjoy a leisurely day on Kolokithia beach, or perhaps rent one of the hotels boats and travel to a secluded beach for a peaceful picnic. Food is central to a stay at Domes of Elounda, with fine dining cuisine with food cooked by the Michelin-starred chef, Lefteri Lazarou. If visiting Crete with a car, it is worth exploring beyond the Elounda area, as the entire island is rich in culture and natural beauty. One of the most notable attractions is the striking Samaria Gorge - an untamed area of steep mountains and vertical cliffs.

A rough idea of price

A similar itinerary would cost in the region of £2,890 per person which includes all flights, hotels, daily breakfast, transfers in Athens, car hire in Crete and half-board in Crete.

A note about prices

The guide prices shown are designed to provide you with a broad indication of how much to budget for your trip. Prices are generally for private arrangements using economy flights based on two people travelling together and sharing a room. There are a number of factors which will influence the price; these include the standard of accommodation, the season, the class of flights, the airline used and the level of private guiding versus shared excursions.
