Life is in the detail

Get up into the hillside overlooking Mount Bromo for sunrise. As the sun burns through the clouds an amazing light is cast across the - almost Jurassic - landscape; without a doubt the best way to experience it before you climb up to the rim of this active volcano crater where you feel like the first person on Earth.

My travels

Travel Things I Want To Do Before I Die

  • Stay in a tree house hotel. I have yet to decide which one but I have a pretty extensive list!
  • Visit my cousin who lives in Madagascar and explore as much of the island as possible
  • Travel the stretch of the Mekong River, from China all the way through Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam

Best Moments

  • Reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro a few days before my 21st birthday. Needless to say I was riddled with altitude sickness and keen to get back down again for a substantial meal, but it was without a doubt one of the best things I have ever done.
  • On a recent trip to Indonesia, with nothing but a 'minimalist' hand drawn map from the owner of our hotel to get us around an island for the day - but ever bowled over by the friendliness of the locals - we were shown an inconspicuous gap in a rock which opened out into a cave housing a 400m long temple! It was incredible and we never would have found it otherwise. That very same day, we also discovered a waterfall and natural pool brimming off the cliffs, all to ourselves without another person in sight. For all you What3Words fans wanting to know the exact location, it's gearing.boudoir.step

Toughest Travel Moment

  • A long night in a police station in New Zealand after mine and a friend's campervan was broken into - no matter how great a Country is always be aware!

Weirdest Travel Moment

  • When I went through a phase of wanting to be a pilot, I asked to speak to the captain on a flight in South Africa. Expecting a probable no, I was ushered into the cockpit and told that I could spend the entire flight there but only if, should someone ask, I said I was pregnant.

Sashimi in Japan

Food Heaven in Japan

Think Japan, think geisha, shrines, samurai, karaoke, manga, bullet trains, neon lights, tea, sake, sushi, sashimi, tempura, tepanyaki, yakatori, miso, ramen, soba, udon... Foreign food is a huge part of why we travel, especially in Asia; to experience the authentic local specialities,…

A colourfully decorated elephant, Rajasthan

Rambling around Rajasthan

India: A cacophony of moments all played in fast forward, with overlaying sounds; loud and jarring. Yes, the beauty lies in the impossible grandeur and elegance of the palaces and forts, but turn to the million rooftops they overlook, with a story beneath each one; each detail that gives…

Temple in Bagan

The Road, River and Runway to Mandalay

They say we're often so focused on the destination that we forget about the all-important journey. And let's face it, when you're travelling to Asia in particular, not only is it a long old haul to get there, but the modes of transport when you're there are generally more interesting than…
