Five of our Favourite Slow Travel Experiences

While in danger of sounding like an overly-cheesy Hollywood film, sometimes it's as much about the journey as it is the destination, especially when said journeys involve stunning scenery gradually unfurling before you while you soak up local life. Oh yes, there's so much to be said for taking the opportunity to just slow down and explore a destination at a leisurely pace. That's where our Slow Travel collection of holidays comes in, from cycling around Uluru in Australia's northern outback to sailing around the Mediterranean exploring hidden coves, and travelling through Europe Agatha Christie-style aboard the Orient Express. Here's five of our top Slow Travel experiences...

Boat

Whittle away a few days soaking up the local sights of river life aboard a luxurious vessel cruising down the Mekong Delta while exploring Vietnam's quieter side in its rural heart. Witness everyday life on the delta's rivers with floating markets, boats and even floating homes passing you by on your journey through the waterways.

Train

Possibly the most civilised form of travel (if done well) take in the spectacular scenery of the Rockies and West Canada's glacial lakes, snow-capped mountains, river canyons and forests on a train trip aboard the Rocky Mountaineer, complete with gourmet food, British Columbian wine and unbeatable views throughout your journey.

Walking

Lace up your walking boots and head to Epirus in northwest Greece where you can hike through Vikos Gorge, the world's deepest canyon. The scenery may be the main draw but there's also over 3,000 species of flora and fauna to be admired in this region. Next up is Meteora, home to jaw-dropping ancient monasteries perched precariously on narrow clifftops.

Cycling

'Tis the season of le Tour de France, and with that comes a certain worldwide cycling obsession. Cycle through Spain's Emporda region, winding through medieval towns, vineyards and olive groves with an expert vinicultural guide in tow. On yer bike!

Riding

Feel at one with nature and saddle up on a riding safari across Kenya's stunning central highlands in Laikipia to access remote areas that a 4x4 cannot reach, galloping alongside incredible game aboard a trusty steed.
