Newly opened in the Maldives...

New hotels open on Maldivian atolls on a pretty regular basis, but one of the most anticipated of 2012 was that of Niyama back in March.

Younger sibling to the highly reputed sophisticated retreat Huvafen Fushi, Niyama had a lot to live up to. Niyama's 86 pavilions and studios range from beach studios with a bath in the garden, to over water villas and beach pavilions with private pools, all (yes - all) have iPads. Dining options are no let-down either with a choice of restaurants to suit all guests. Signature restaurant Edge lies 500 metres off shore, accessible only by boat; a first for the Maldives.

Whilst following in big sis' glamour and luxury steps, the Niyama hotel added funk and attitude in to the mix with Subsix; the world's first underwater club. Situated six metres underground on the seabed, beneath the Edge restaurant, Subsix is accessed via a staircase. Once in the club, floor to ceiling windows provide views of clown fish, manta rays, parrot fish and other exotic marine life. The bar specialises in both cocktails and Champagne, to be enjoyed on the intimate dance floor or from a comfy chair with unforgettable views. DJ's provide the soundtrack to this most unusual of nights out, with beats pulsating through the Bose surround sound system, while the sounds are kept fresh and diverse thanks to the regular rotation of DJs. Subsix is due to open in October 2012 with a sprinkling of celebrity performances to celebrate including Tinie Tempah, and Poet Name Life.
