One of Tanzania’s most luxurious lodges is tucked away, miles from any other camps in the mighty Selous Game Reserve, along the banks of the Ruaha River. Being isolated within the Selous has huge advantages; often guests will not see another safari vehicle whilst on game drives, giving the feeling that you’re exploring a private concession.

Azura Selous offers just 12 luxurious tented villas which are perched along the river, with wonderful views over the rapids, and resident herd of hippos. Air-conditioning keeps the tents cool, whilst a late afternoon dip in the private plunge pools cannot be beaten for the ultimate in safari downtime. Tents also boast private decking, luxurious stone bathrooms with double vanity sinks and both indoor and outdoor showers. Tents are individually designed, each with an animal theme, and are furnished with handmade items sourced from local community based projects. There is also a single Premium Villa - Villa Twiga - which is the most spacious and luxurious villa, boasting a riverside daybed and covered seating area overlooking the Ruaha River and the resident pod of hippos.

For larger families or groups of friends, this stunning lodge can also be booked on an exclusive basis, accommodating up to 24 adults - plus a few little ones within the spacious tents. Speaking of little ones, Azura Selous is one of the more family friendly luxury camps, accepting guests aged six plus. The lodge also runs the only children's activity programme in the Selous Game Reserve, designed to both educate, and entertain the younger minds at the lodge. Nature walks around the camp are offered, whilst kids over 12 can enjoy a walking safari with their parents, and lodge guides.

Unlike many other safari lodges, communal dining is not the norm at Azura - unless of course guests would prefer to enjoy a hearty meal whilst comparing the days game sightings. Instead, a la carte three course lunches and dinners are served in a variety of locations, from breakfast in the bush, to candlelit dinners on private decks, and guests can dine in a different spot each night. Menus are designed around the freshest available produce, and the chef can also rustle up children's meals.

For complete relaxation, spa treatments can be taken on the private deck of each villa, with the flow of the Great Ruaha River providing the soundtrack, or guests can float and lounge around the central infinity pool.

Herds of elephant, buffalo and hippo can be found in the Selous Game Reserve, alongside lion, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, kudu and leopard, as well as the rare African wild dog. Guests will explore on twice daily game drives, traversing rivers and ravines off-road, in search of game.

After rattling around on a game drive, guests may opt to explore the bush on a walking safari, following animal tracks, listening to bird calls and learning about the medicinal uses of bush plants. Keen birders can search out their choice of over 400 bird species recorded in the Selous, whilst there is also the option to fish the Great Ruaha River.

Why We Love It
Image of Eleanor Orr

The Selous is the largest game reserve in Africa, a World Hertiage Site, and the second oldest game reserve in the world, and Azura Selous' isolated spot makes guests feel as though they have the reserve to themselves.
