South Africa in Style

Itinerary Highlights

  • Cape Town - 3 days
Arriving in Cape Town settle into the luxurious Clarendon Bantry Bay, a boutique hotel located in the oceanfront suburb of Bantry Bay. With views over the Atlantic, the Clarendon Bantry Bay Hotel is within walking distance of the famous Clifton beaches, just ten minutes from the city centre and the bustling Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Spend days exploring the village-like suburbs of the city, travel to the peak of Table Mountain for sweeping city and ocean views, and explore Robben Island, the infamous prison island where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years. The city is also the fast becoming a gastronomy hot spot in South Africa, and so fine wining-and-dining should feature high on the agenda of any visitor.
  • Winelands - 3 days
Leaving the city behind, travel inland to explore the Cape Winelands. Less than an hour's drive from Cape Town arrive at Babylonstoren, a Cape Dutch farmstead which sits within easy reach of the towns of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, and world-class vineyards. The number one attraction for most is of course the wine, and days can be spent wine tasting at a number of estates nearby, accompanied by cheese and chocolate tasting for the full gourmet experience. And speaking of gourmet, the town of Franschhoek is home to a handful of incredible restaurants which should certainly be enjoyed during your stay. Even Babylonstoren has a gourmet focus, with much of the produce used in the restaurant coming from the orchards and gardens on site. To counteract the foodie indulgence, enjoy hikes, horseback riding or a round of golf, or swim some laps of the pool. Other activities include cookery classes, fly fishing, and the spa offers a range of indulgent treatments.
  • Hermanus - 3 days
Driving east, the next stop is Walker Bay just outside of Hermanus, on the fabled 'Garden Route' - perfect self-drive territory. From May to December, the Southern Right whale arrives in Walker Bay, whilst the resident Bryde's whales can be found year round, accompanied by cape fur seals, bottlenose dolphins and African penguins. Stay at Birkenhead House, a luxurious coastal hotel with just ten rooms, a swimming pool, massage centre and fantastic dining room. Aside whale watching trips, enjoy walks along cliff paths and in the mountains, horse riding, sea kayaking and fishing. A handful of local swimmable beaches make the perfect spot for a relaxed afternoon too.
  • Eastern Cape Safari - 3 days
No trip to South Africa would be complete without safari, and the Eastern Cape offers the added benefit of being a Malaria free region. Stay in the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, which stretches along the banks of the Great Fish River, and spend days in search of the 'big 5', as well as Cheetah and even Black Rhino. This 22,000 hectare reserve is a wildlife and conservation haven, and home to a handful of luxurious lodges. Great Fish River Lodge offers the most authentic safari experience, and sits high up overlooking the Great Fish River - perfect 'sofa-safari' territory. Evenings are spent enjoying delicious African-inspired meals on private decks, in the candlelit dining room or in the cosy boma under a clear night sky.
