Itinerary Highlights

  • Volcanoes National Park - 4 Days
Begin with a stay at the charming Virunga Safari Lodge, set into the Volcanoes National Park. The opportunity to unwind in total seclusion from the bustle of everyday life is a rarity in itself, but combine that with marvellous views across the sprawling greenery below, and the thrill of catching sight of the over 450 spectacular silverback gorillas roaming free in the region, and you have an exhilarating safari experience unlike any other. Getting close to these fascinating creatures is truly humbling, and an utter privilege - their uncanny likeness to man (though unsurprising considering the 98% of DNA that we all share) is enough to strike even the hardiest traveller. For those with a little time left over, visit the brilliant Dian Fossey memorial and research centre or discover the nearby Ruhondo and Bulera lakes by boat. Soaking up this sumptuously unspoilt wildlife haven is a magical experience.

  • Nyungwe Forest National Park - 4 Days
Rwanda's infrastructure is very much on the up following a huge push in the tourism and ecological industries, striving to recover from the aftermath of the terrible genocide of 1994. The country's wildlife is most definitely back to its former tourist-enticing glory, and increasingly protected in places such as Nyungwe Forest, declared a national park in 2004. Set high above the jungle, Nyungwe Forest Lodge is a safari enthusiast's dream. Home to 13 different species of primate, including chimpanzees, and 275 bird species, in a setting of undulating volcanic and lush green scenery makes for a pretty impressive safari experience.
