Walking Safaris
Zambia
Safari – been there, done that? Well here at Original Travel and Tim Best Travel we disagree unless you’ve done a walking safari in Zambia.
Zambia is the birthplace of the walking safari and South Luangwa is still undoubtedly the best place to go for the most authentic and memorable experience. Accompanied by the very best guides, embark on an exhilarating journey, tracking animals on foot and crawling up so close to them that you can almost touch them (while always maintaining a safe distance of course!) So much goes unnoticed when driving, but you won’t miss even the smallest of insects on your feet.
They can be done in different ways, the most popular being walking between permanent camps or joining a mobile safari, where you tents will be packed up and driven to the next camp each day by your team of staff while you walk. The latter is generally slightly longer, lasting between a week and ten days, and departures dates are set with group sizes limited to a maximum of eight people. Whichever option you choose, we guarantee you’ll enjoy every moment of it. You’ll always be greeted with a refreshing drink and a delicious meal when you arrive at your camp and sleeping in the heart of the bush is an unbeatable experience. You’ll spend the evenings around a cosy campfire with your guides who know an unfathomable amount about the area and are full of amusing stories to keep your mind off the sounds of the howling hyenas in the distance.
A short charter flight from South Luangwa, the originally named North Luangwa is the place your wild African dreams are made of. You can walk and walk for days without coming across another soul in this remote part of the country staying in small rustic camps. Whether you head north or south though, a walking safari in Zambia is the ultimate safari experience and one you are unlikely to forget in a hurry.

Liuwa PlainZambiaTell an Africaphile you are going to "Liuwa Plain" - and you’ll grab their attention. Many seasoned Africa travellers have heard of these vast open grasslands in the far west of Zambia but few, very very few, have been there. This vast open plain lies west of the Zambezi River, on the Angolan Border. It is extremely hard to get to, being cut off other than by boat for 4 months of the year (Jan - April), and even when you can drive there it is an expedition to do so - with miles and miles of rutted sand roads and no road signs! |
