Spice Islands & the Tanzanian Coast

Tanzania

Enjoy miles of unspoilt white sand beaches and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean from a handful of idyllic beach retreats along the Tanzanian Coast and neighbouring Spice Islands, where barefoot luxury and total relaxation are the order of the day.

The Tanzanian Coast offers a multitude of beach options for those looking for a pre or post safari break, whether it’s for some r and r on the beach or a visit to Stone Town for those in search of culture.

One of the main draw cards, however, are the fabulous archipelago of Spice islands – namely Pemba, Zanzibar and Mafia Island – all different from each other but equally fantastic. There is no better way to explore the Spice Islands than by hopping around them, and with regular flights between all three, we think it makes perfect sense.

Zanzibar is the largest and one of the better known islands, with endless miles of white sand beaches, and despite the fact that more hotels have started popping up over the last few years, it for the most part remains un spoilt. Its added attraction is of course Stone Town, with its old world charm still very much in tact - spend the day getting lost in the windy cobbled streets, enjoying the street markets and mixing with the locals.

Just a 20 minute hop to the south is Mafia. Home to some of the richest coral reefs in the world and to Tanzania’s first Marine Park, it has great snorkelling and diving. With only a handful of hotels, including one of our favourite’s Pole Pole, and less than a 1000 visitors each year, it is one of those well kept secrets we want to keep to ourselves. Luckily for everyone else, we’re not that selfish.

For the ultimate Robinson Crusoe experience, Pemba Island is the place to go. Fundu Lagoon is one of just three hotels. A constant favourite with honeymooners, there is little chance of distraction.

Stress-free days can be idled away on the Spice Islands and Tanzanian Coast with swimming in the clear turquoise waters, gentle strolls along the beach or a therapeutic massage. Alternatively, relax in a hammock in the shade of a palm tree with a good book and a cool drink and watch the dhows drift by. Meals are based on delicious fresh seafood, caught locally and served under the stars in the evenings.

For those feeling a little more energetic, the waters around the Zanzibar archipelago host a rich variety of marine life, from colourful reef fish to dolphins, turtles and whale sharks, and offer some fantastic snorkelling and diving. Other watersports available include fishing, kayaking, windsurfing and waterskiing.
