Serengeti & Beyond
Tanzania
This is classic savannah scenery, and the setting for the great migration when millions of wildebeest, zebra and other plains game move in a continuous cycle around the Serengeti-Masai ecosystem, following the rains in search of fresh grazing and running the gauntlet of carnivores such as lions and crocodiles
It was probably inevitable that such a spectacle would induce a migration of a tourist variety, so Original Travel – who know the region intimately - can suggest the best places to stay for the most uninterrupted game viewing experience.
The Grumeti Reserve in the western corridor of the Serengeti is one such spot. Set in 400,000 acres of pristine and private wilderness, this former hunting concession is continually patrolled which ensures absolute privacy to guests who stay at one of only three lodges.
At the other end of the Serengeti an extraordinary setting and the diversity of the Ngorongoro Crater’s wildlife led to it being named a World Heritage Site. Nearly three million years old and twelve miles across, Ngorongoro is the largest ancient volcanic caldera in the world and a place of immense natural beauty. Now a haven for wild game, the crater offers year-round game-viewing of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, black-maned lion, the endangered black rhino and thousands of flamingos that live on the soda lake at the crater’s centre.
