Dive Vamizi
Mozambique
The Maluane Conservation Area comprises three Indian Ocean islands (one being Vamizi) and a 33,000-hectare inland wildlife safari area, but it’s the wildlife beneath the waves that wins hands down.
Over 350 species of reef fish are found in these waters, as well as humpback whales, whale sharks, the endangered dugong, and two species of turtle that nest on the island’s beaches. The highlight of any dive trip to Vamizi has to be a visit to the incomparable Neptune’s Arm - surely a contender for the top ten dive sites in the world, and the best dive that Tim Simond, author of Dive in Style, and one of the Original Travel directors have ever done.
Not only is the scenery – a pristine wall dropping several thousand feet followed by a series of canyons and pinnacles – simply spectacular, but the sheer volume of sea life inhabiting this area is second to none. The Vamizi dive team say it’s pretty much always the same – there are giant potato cod by the hundreds, drifting on the current, a school of some 30 or 40 large grey reef sharks patrolling the channels and huge shoals of snapper and batfish completing the picture.
The dive is not for beginners, but Vamizi has plenty of other gems, including Fraggle Rock for its shoals of moorish idols; Skunk Alley and the house reef which alone has barracuda by the dozen, turtles and simply hundreds of thousands of reef dwelling fish.
