Liwonde National Park & the South
Malawi
Situated just to the south of Lake Malawi, the expanse of Liwonde National Park adjoins Lake Malombe and the upper Shire River.
The variety of habitat in Liwonde National Park is immense, ranging from open savannah, hills and woodland to lush and richly vegetated marshes, lagoons and the floodplains of the broad and slow flowing river. Such diversity means that Liwonde has prolific wildlife and some of the most scenic game-viewing in Malawi and comes highly recommended by Original Travel and Tim Best Travel as somewhere just a bit different but well worth exploring.
Other wildlife includes healthy populations of elephant and hippo, crocodiles, zebra, buffalo, monkeys and many species of antelope including waterbuck and sable. Predators include lion, leopard and jackal.
The concept of ‘bush and beach’ may be well-known, but a combination of Liwonde National Park and a luxury lodge on the shores of nearby Lake Malawi would make for a an original and excellent African trip. Elsewhere in the south of the country is Blantyre, the country’s largest town, with historical monuments and a variety of attractions close by. South of Blantyre is the magnificent Mount Mulanje and the beautiful Thyolo tea estates it overlooks. The old capital town of Zomba and the famous views from Zomba Plateau are also a short drive away.
