Manda Bay
Update after recent events.
Following two attacks by armed gangs in small boats against beach resorts in the Lamu area on 11 September and 1 October 2011, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office has changed its Travel Advice to Kenya to advise against all but essential travel to coastal areas within 150kms (95 miles) of the Somali border. This advice will be kept under review. Both attacks were on beachfront properties, with two Westerners kidnapped and one murdered. Full travel advice for Kenya can be found on the FCO website - http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-count...
Please note this advice includes the island of Lamu, which is within the area stated, but locations further south such as Diani Beach and Funzi Keys are not affected. The Government of Kenya is working closely with British, French and international authorities to ensure that acts of piracy by Somali nationals are stopped and that these hostages are released.
We at Original Travel and the Kenyan authorities wish to point that the recent despicable acts of Somali pirates have only affected a small part of Kenya. A glance at the map will show that these events have occurred hundreds of miles away from the inland destinations which are so popular with the majority visitors. With the small exception of the northern coast none of Kenya’s destinations are not in any way affected. Tourism is a hugely important part of Kenya’s economy and a major employer, so our thoughts are with our friends and suppliers on the ground, and we also offer our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of these terrible attacks. More details will be given as soon as they become available.
