Best moments

The Schoeman family's Skeleton Coast flying safari was incredible. The scenery changed so much from hour to hour and completely blew me away. One moment we’d be flying over a fog belt, swooping down to catch sight of the barren beaches, shipwrecks and seal colonies; next minute we’d land on the beach for a picnic before heading off into the desert to slide down the enormous sand dunes that squeak as you slide. Another favourite moment was flying into the Maldives. I was convinced that all of the pictures I had seen previously had been airbrushed to within an inch of their lives - I was wrong. The views were phenomenal, I kept looking for some sort of mainland but it literally is just hundreds and hundreds of tiny coral desert islands... paradise, basically, and that’s before I’d even been to any of the resorts!

Best avoided

Before my trip to the Maldives, I had not really appreciated the importance of choosing the right island, thinking any desert island must surely be heaven, right? After my ‘gruelling’ trip around the various islands, I realised how crucial it is to get the right match for the right person. All of the resorts in the Maldives are private islands so you don’t really leave your island other than for boat trips to dive or dine on or around a local island. The resorts vary enormously in what they offer in terms of style, feel, food, facilities etc so it's absolutely crucial to get it right.

Going to the Amalfi coast alone…its breathtakingly beautiful and from experience, it’s a tragedy not to share that with someone!
