Watching humpback whales in the Bazaruto Archipelago. In the couple of hours we were there we must have seen at least 60 breaching and slapping the water in the breeding ground, along with a flock of flamingos and flying stingrays. Some of the whales, averaging 40 tonnes and 45ft in length, came very close to the boat. Riding in Oyamel forests in Michoacan, Mexico, to see the spectacular migration of Monarch butterflies in their millions beginning their journey north to Canada and the USA. At one point you could hardly see the sky there were so many butterflies.
Best avoided
Spending too much time in the markets of Lamu Town, Kenya. The town itself is a definite must see but getting caught in the meat and fish market, the heat, swarms of flies and unbearable smell is not one of my favourite memories. Getting into a taxi in Marrakech without having a vague idea where you are going - the taxi drivers seem to have as little knowledge of the city as tourists...it can get incredibly frustrating and short distances can turn in to long journeys!
