Our USA Travel Blogs

As the USA is a big place with a lot to do, it's pretty handy (as well as entertaining - naturally) reading what people have to say about their destinations of choice. Our Original Team and fellow travellers have visited the States on many occasions, and the snippets from their trips always make for good reading. Take a look at what our very own OT-ers and USA holidaymakers have to say about the fabulous Country in our travel blogs:

A Room With A View

We may have shamelessly stolen E.M. Forster's title but fear not, we're not embarking upon a literary critique of 20th Century English society (that's next week). We've instead been pondering the very best views from some simply spectacular hotel rooms across the planet… a guaranteed bestseller, you'll agree. And whether you're jetting off in search of a great holiday adventure or simply looking forward to some much deserved R&R, nothing says 'holiday' quite like luxuriating in the new surroundings of your hotel room and gazing out on the scenery you'll soon be exploring. Our team of experts has scoured the globe one panoramic vista at a time (tough gig) and compiled a list of our very favourite spots…

Find Your Inner Olympian: Sit-Down Sports Around the World

The Olympics are in full swing and that means just one thing: as a nation we're collectively glued to our telly boxes. We're all suddenly experts on fencing ("excellent use of the appel there") and can't tear ourselves away from the table tennis ("did you see that slow spinny topspin?"). And while we've all been cheering on Team GB to gold medal glory, something of a trend has become apparent: we're awfully good at sitting down. Cycling, rowing, dressage, sailing - the Brits really do excel at the sedentary sports. So the team here at Original Travel took a leaf out of Sir Ben Ainslie et al's book and had a good sit down and a think about the best places on the planet to partake in such derriere-dedicated activities. If only sitting on the sofa and having a cuppa qualified for the Olympics…

Our Top Six Cities Around the World

When asked to picture their perfect holiday, many people's minds immediately hit the beach; warm white sand between the toes, sparkling azure waters and someone rather good-looking fanning you with a large palm leaf. And who are we to deny such glories? But here at Original Travel we're also partial to something a little more… rousing. That is to say we love a good city. Oh yes, we rub our hands together in veritable glee at the prospect of bustling markets, burgeoning foodie scenes, street art, botanical gardens, booming nightlife and incredible architecture. And whether you're in need of a short sharp hit of culture with a classic weekend city break or are exploring as part of a longer trip, we've got the inside track (and a network of concierge contacts), to ensure the ultimate city adventure…

Original Travel Does Top Gear: Our Favourite Road Trips

Dear Top Gear Producers, we couldn't help but notice that you haven't had much luck in the presenter department in the last year or two. Perhaps it's time for a gear change (see what we did there?) and we are officially throwing our hats in the ring. Here's the pitch: fewer of the aforementioned pesky presenters, more switch-back turns, sweeping coastal roads, cross-country highways and epic scenery. Yep, let's make Top Gear one giant, worldwide road trip. A luxury road trip no less with the team here at Original Travel sharing the inside track (sorry, can't help it) on all the very best hotels to stay at along the way. Genius, we think you'll agree. And as if you needed any more convincing, here are a few of our favourite road trips to whet your appetite.

Luxury Honeymoons in North America

Welcome to North America: for couples that lust after long open roads and endless adventures. Dive straight in to our favourite suggestions for a luxury honeymoon to North America.

Suite Treats

George Osborne may have declared war on sweets with the introduction of his sugar tax in this year's budget but luckily we get our kicks from the suite (see what I did there?) treats of an altogether different kind. Our suite tooth (sorry, can't help it) is rather partial to the exceptional service, magical settings and chic interiors of some of the very best hotel suites in the world. Think breathtaking views, private pools, luxurious furniture and being spoiled to within an inch of your life. So sit back, relax and spend a couple of minutes ogling at some of the very finest suites from around the world; here are a few of our favourites...

New York and Kauai: The perfect Yin and Yang Combo

I have come to the conclusion that I am a tad Yin and Yang. I adore the city but I also thrive on country life. I travel extensively but I also find happiness with my home comforts. I explore the new but always return to my favourites - which is probably why I love visiting contrasting destinations on holiday. With one, you appreciate the other, and this duality is one of the reasons I strongly recommend combining the ever bustling New York City with one of the most beautiful and remote islands on Earth, Kauai in Hawaii.

Parlez-vous Anglais?

Consider the English-speaking world. Don't panic - this isn't going to be some misty-eyed paean to the age of Empire, when Britannia ruled the waves, and the sun never set, etc; but if you think about the places that speak English as their first language, they make for a pretty spectacular wish list of destinations. Visiting places like Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and the US of A means scenery, culture, wildlife, food and fun for sure, but there's another - less obvious, but no less important - reason to go.

How to do Hawaii

Hawaii is a land of beautiful beaches, looming volcanoes, lush rainforest and chic boutique hotels. So if geography was no barrier, this is how I'd spend a day in the marvellous place that is Hawaii...

Where We've Been in 2015

'Twas a crisp and icy morning on the 6th of January 2003 when Original Travel was officially brought into the world. Its mission? To make sure you have the most wonderful holiday experiences imaginable, down to the very last detail. And 12 years, 8 months, 3 days and a few hours later that statement still stands. Which is why our team of destination experts regularly pack their suitcases, grab their passports and selflessly jet off around the globe in search of the best destinations, hotels and experiences out there, whether getting off the beaten track and exploring a newcomer to the luxury travel world, or revisiting an old favourite. It's a tough gig, but someone's got to do it, and here's just a few of the places we've been to in 2015.

Family Adventure Holidays

Thrilling adventures don't have to stop as soon as the kids arrive. At Original Travel we pride ourselves on being able to make even the most action packed holiday totally family friendly. After all, sometimes it's not only the children who can't sit still for five minutes.

Christmas Getaways: Time To Start Planning

Talk of Christmas already?!? Before you think we've gone all Argos on you, the majority of great festive season holiday spots do get booked up well in advance and as travel guardian angels we naturally only want the best for you. So, if the thought of doing one of Nigella's coke soaked hams (now, now) is not on the agenda this year then why not think about jetting off to pastures new? Whether you want to embrace yuletide traditions or get away from them, here's a little selection for you.

California Dreamin'

'It's just BEAUTIFUL, you guys'...is how Californians describe pretty much everything. Americans are, generally speaking, prolific users of the superlative, and Californians are no exception. And I don't blame them for their permanent state of enthusiasm; they live in one of the best places in the world...

Our Top Ten Honeymoon Hotels

Everybody loves a list, and anyone planning a honeymoon needs this particular one in their life. After much deliberation the team at Original Travel have come up with their Top 10 Honeymoon Hotels from around the world. Editing the list down to a mere ten proved mighty difficult, and more than a little contentious, but we like a challenge, so here goes with the finest post-wedding wonders…

Seeing Southern California

'I suddenly realized I was in California. Warm, palmy air - air you can kiss - and palms.' Although Jack Kerouac's On the Road didn't impress me, he did a pretty good job at describing what it feels like to arrive in Southern California.

The Foodie Tour of America

As a nation of immigrants, the US of A is home to some truly diverse dishes. Here we take a look at some American Classics from the American Grill menu by our friends at Deliverance.

Private Island Holidays: Robinson Crusoe Meets Modern-Day Billionaire

What does a wanderlusting billionaire have in common with Robinson Crusoe? A penchant for desert islands, of course. Private Islands have become the ultimate statement of wealth and opulence in the past few decades. Little did Crusoe know that his life of primitive solitude would be so coveted in the 21st Century (minus the random acts of cannibalism, natch). Maybe it's the commuting-hell we go through every day, or our fantasy to be swept a shore with just eight songs, one book and a luxury item a la Radio 4 that has given private island ownership cult status.

24 hours in... Brooklyn, New York

The trendification of New York's Brooklyn suburb has been well publicised over the past few years and it's become synonymous with the word 'hipster'. Jay-Z's childhood play ground now has streets laden with artisan coffee shops, quirky boutiques and trendy beards. Not forgetting it's a foodie's paradise and home to the Brooklyn Nets.

Texas Pecan Pie Recipe

From the heart of Texas comes the traditional pecan pie, representing Texas's pride as the pecan is the nation's state tree. You will never miss this pie on thanksgiving or at Christmas as it is an essential (and incredibly delicious) part of Texan culture. Convince yourself:

The World on Sale

So what's up? It's more a question of what's down, and particularly against the Pound, thanks to a resurgent British economy. The rest will inevitably catch up (we're good sports like that) so the exchange rate bonanza won't last, but in the meantime there are bargains to be had. The World's on sale - get shopping!

Cool Destination Combos

Like a maxi dress and wedges, or jeans and a jacket, some combos just work. Behold, our favourite tailor made, two-pronged trip ideas. After all, the best things do come in pairs...

Fourteen destinations for 2014

14 for '14? Sounds like a set of Mitchell Johnson's bowling figures from the recent Ashes debacle (one for the chaps there) but on this occasion referring to our predictions for the 14 destinations that are going to be big news in 2014.

An American Road Trip: Las Vegas

What started as a trip to one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World - the Grand Canyon - became something entirely more memorable. As Original Traveller Tony Herbert's tailor made American Road Trip blog series testifies, life is in the detail…

The Many Sights of New York

Whilst exploring the sights of New York I find myself eating too much at the wrong times, revelling in the bustle and soaking up an intense slice of city living.

Aloha! Welcome to the Islands of Hawaii

Hawaii is undoubtedly a holiday-of-a-lifetime kind of destination - but each of the six inhabited islands has its own character, soul, and a nickname. So how should you choose which to visit? Read on...

Best Holidays for Teenagers

Are you having difficulty trying to think of a holiday destination to take your teenagers? Wondering how on earth you are going to tear them away from technology and encourage them to hang out with their parents for a week or two? Look no further, as we have come up with a list of the best holidays for teenagers which we believe are guaranteed to turn your youths into the perfect travelling companions!

Tom's Travels: Las Vegas Trip (Part 2)

Our particularly well-travelled intern, Tom Surr, has been kind enough to share some of his experiences with us - and this is the second part of his account of a West Coast USA road trip. Having arrived in LA, visited San Francisco and Yosemite National Park, and got the lowdown on the West Coast's food on the go, part one of Tom's travels left us (quite literally) hungry for more.

80 Senses: #15 - The High Line New York

New York's new park... We really do ♥ NY. There's something extremely comforting about arriving back after a year away to find yellow cabs still being driven appallingly, wintry steam still rising from vents in the street (only in winter, obviously), and every inhabitant still acting like they're in a movie.

Holidays with a Difference

Some of our favourite places are tainted by misconceptions, but if you scratch beneath the surface you can discover some wonderful holidays with a difference. So here we're taking a slightly different approach to four places with stigmas attached, that don't seem fair, if only you know where to go.

An all American California Road Trip

Having just come back from a fantastic California road trip I can comfortably say that I've ticked off one destination from my travel bucket list. It says plenty about a place when on return you start thinking about going back, cherry picking your favourite spots and raving about it to anyone who will listen.

Travelling With a Baby Across the Deep South - Good Idea?

Find out what I think...A 3,000 mile trip around the Southern US in 12 days travelling with a baby (9 months old). A good idea? On paper, no. It was a stupid idea. One intensified when my wife declared she had 'misplaced' her driving licence as we boarded the plane, meaning I would be the only one driving at 55mph for the best part of all the waking hours, for 12 days… It couldn't have felt worse.

The Perfect New York Day at the Plaza Hotel

Until three days ago, The Plaza Hotel in New York brought Sex and the City to mind - remember the one when Big has his engagement party and Carrie says to him, 'Your girl is lovely, Hubbell'? I only watched The Way We Were because of that line. Now when I think of The Plaza Hotel, I start salivating like one of Pavlov's dogs (and no, he was not my great-grandfather).

Thank you so so much for all your help with our holiday; I cannot recommend all your efforts highly enough. Everything went so smoothly.
