The American dream honeymoon
This couple wanted a Californian honeymoon that fused the best of a city break, outdoor adventure, and luxury pampering.
Approximate budget: £3,400
A continent-sized country, the USA pretty much has it all, and Original Travel has cherry-picked the very best bits. We offer tailor made holidays to include experiences as different as the brash hedonism of Las Vegas and the wide open spaces of Montana, and the beaches of the Florida Keys or the majestic scenery of the Rocky Mountains.
A road-trip is such a special way to explore this country – there are so many classic routes criss-crossing the USA. I loved cruising down Big Sur in California, and driving across Hawaii in a convertible Mustang wasn’t too shabby, either!

Aloha. Welcome to the 50th State of the U S of A and one that is completely unlike any of the other 49.
A buzzing contemporary art scene, a dance music scene threatening to rival that in Ibiza, the extremely sexy Cuban exile scene, and a gay see and be scene. It could only be Miami.
Viva Las Vegas!
Does it need an introduction? Go shopping, go partying, stay in an uber cool urban hotel, and enjoy your bite out of the Big Apple.
When a country is the size of a continent you’d expect it to have a national park or two, but a visitor to the States could spend every day of the year in a different park and still need another month or two to complete the set. In fact, the US National Park Service protects a total of 84 million acres across every state in the Union. Now that’s impressive.
A beautiful part of the United States, and a great place to enjoy outstanding wine, food and nature.
The coast of California between San Francisco and Los Angeles is home to one of the most famous stretches of road in the world, and one of the most romantic and dramatic road trips.
Hotel Wailea is one of the few quality boutique hotels in Hawaii, with a relaxed, laid back vibe verging on hippy-ish, but authentic all the same.
Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is, in our humble opinion, the best of the bunch among the Four Seasons properties in Hawaii. It seems others agree, as it’s also apparently the most successful Four Seasons in the world.
Four Seasons Lana'i at Manele Bay is perched on top of a red-lava cliff overlooking the lovely Hulopo'e white-sand beach. The resort borders a marine preserve and is coloured with waterfalls, gardens, streams and ponds.
This Four Seasons Resort is located in the white-sand crescent of Maui’s southwest coast.
Koa Kea on the lush tropical island of Kauai is a smaller set up than the ubiquitous Four Seasons resorts we recommend on other islands.
The St Regis is part of the larger Princeville Resort, which also includes a Westin Hotel, a smattering of condos, two golf courses and a ranch where guests can go riding or zip-wiring.
The Modern is a contemporary urban hotel at the top end of Waikiki Beach on Honolulu. Unlike on some of the other islands where height restrictions are in place, the Modern – all 18 floors of it – is a genuine skyscraper with predictably good views as a result.
Located in one of the tallest Art Deco buildings on Collins Avenue, SLS is uber cool and one of the go-to hotels of the moment, for the in crowd anyway.
Once again, Soho House brings a slice of Britain across the pond – a la Soho Houses New York and LA – and as before, pulls it off magnificently.
Although a little calmer than its party animal neighbours (some say boring, others say phew), the Setai’s location in the heart of Miami’s South Beach is spot on.
Located on one of the islands along the Venetian Causeway off Miami Beach, the Standard Spa is perfect for organic falalfel eating, kaftan wearing types, and actually anyone else with an eye for the aesthetic and a sense of style.
Located on Ocean Drive (the good end), Tides is just across the road from the beach and within walking distance of all the places a first time visitor should go.
The Bellagio overlooks a 12-acre lake replica of Italy's Lake Como, complete with a choreographed ballet of water, music and lights. Avoid the crowds watching the lake's famous fountain show while enjoying a cocktail in the Bellagio's Hyde Bar.
The Four Seasons Hotel is a sanctuary from the bright lights of the dazzling Las Vegas Strip, with ‘just’ 424 guest rooms and suites, making this one of the more intimate hotels in town.
A mere three billion dollars in the making, Steve Wynn’s eponymous temple to luxury rivals the Bellagio – another of his creations – for sheer opulence. If that wasn't enough, he also built an adjacent sister resort, aptly named Encore.
One of the best new boutique hotels in New York, and sister hotel to Hollywood’s famed Chateau Marmont, the Mercer prides itself on its service and attention to detail.
The legendary Gramercy Park Hotel has been given the full Ian Schrager treatment since the 2006 relaunch with about as eclectic interiors as a hotel can get away with and stay the right side of good taste.
Part of the ultra cool (and British we may add) Soho House set, Soho House New York has taken a slice of our cool Britannia across the pond, and boy has it done us proud.
Any hotel owned by Robert de Niro is likely to be pretty cool, but you can be pretty sure there won’t be too many unhappy customers demanding face to face complaint time with the owner either.
Surrounded by one of the USA’s most dramatic landscapes with canyons and towering plateaus as far as the eye can see, Amangiri is fairly unassuming from the outside and lets the land do the talking.
With the exception of nearby Philipsburg (population 930), The Ranch at Rock Creek offers the perfect wild west experience, and it really is wild, with 6,600 acres of mountains, meadows, lakes and streams between you and any real evidence of civilisation.
A great alternative to the Ahwahnee Hotel, Tenaya Lodge is just outside Yosemite National Park’s south gate surrounded by almost 50 acres of beautiful forest. This lovely stone and timber lodge has the feel of an alpine lodge with a Native American twist.
The Ahwahnee Hotel sits in splendid isolation in the middle of the Yosemite Valley and for setting alone would rank as the best hotel in the National Park.
Yountville is the gastronomic capital of Napa Valley, and Hotel Yountville arguably the best place to stay therein.
Auberge du Soleil began life as a highly acclaimed restaurant. Today the fantastic restaurant remains, and rooms have been added.
Napa and Sonoma Valleys are sonomanous (sorry) with elegant country properties that verge on the cutesy, but Solage Calistoga breaks the mould in style.
The ranch is tucked away in a private canyon in the Upper Napa Valley, just outside the historic town of Calistoga.
This cliff hanger hotel - it literally does hang over the cliffs - is one of the few places to stay along the Big Sur (of this standard anyway), meaning guests can explore uninterrupted to their hearts content.
Cavallo Point is a historic boutique hotel just 15 minutes south of Sausalito. It occupies an enviable position at the base of San Francisco’s most noteworthy landmark, the Golden Gate Bridge.
The Four Seasons group acquired this Spanish-style 1920's hacienda during the Reagan era and restored the 22-acre property to make the most of its historic charm.
