Winter in Whistler

Canada

A short journey up the ‘Sea-to-Sky Highway’ from Vancouver, Whistler is British Columbia’s (and one of North America’s) leading winter resorts, and a major venue for the 2010 Winter Olympics

On the two mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb there are groomed runs for every standard of skier; more than one could cover in a week, plus tree runs, steep couloirs and the new backcountry experience of the Flute Bowl.

Snowboarders are well catered for, with two well maintained parks, two half-pipes (one floodlit) and some excellent free-riding.

Whistler also makes an excellent family ski destination, and beginners are in the safe hands of the international ski school. We know Whistler inside and out, and that it’s more than just a ski resort, more an all-round winter playground, with all kinds of activities on offer. We can arange snowmobile adventures and heli-skiing or, for more peaceful pursuits, guided snowshoeing tours and cross-country skiing trails offer breathtaking alpine scenery.

Whistler has some excellent restaurants, both on and off the mountains, and the village itself offers a range of facilities that puts most European resorts to shame. If bad weather makes outdoor activities impossible, there are plenty of indoor activities to keep you busy – the resort has everything from cinemas and good shopping to ice-skating, swimming, indoor tennis and an indoor climbing wall. Alternatively, a day-trip to Vancouver is always an option.

Last but not least, Whistler has a good après ski scene, with something to suit all tastes.

Polar bears & Beluga whales in Churchill
Canada

On the shores of Hudson Bay in Manitoba sits Churchill, the ‘Polar Bear Capital of the world’ because it is supposedly the most accessible place in the world to see polar bears. More accurate to say that this is the best place on Earth to see the ice bear in any significant numbers because this is not exactly an easy place to get to - there are no roads into Churchill, and you can only get there by a two-hour flight from Winnipeg or by 300 mile train journey which takes a couple of days.
