Australasia & Pacific IslandsBest moments
As I run the diving division of the company I thought this should be my best dive. This was in the Galapagos Islands, at dawn, in an immense extinct underwater volcano. It was just me and my guide on the dive and we felt like intrepid explorers. As we descended, the currents were swirling and there was life everywhere. We went down to about 25 metres, grabbed on to a rock and just watched, mesmerised as nature unfolded before us. All manner of creatures were out for their morning feed. There were countless sharks - Galapagos sharks, white-tips - more than I have ever seen in one place. And there were an unbelievable number of turtles. After about 30 minutes it was time to return to the surface, leaving this magical world behind. As we motored back to the main boat the sun was rising in the sky and we were back before the others had even woken up. Not a bad story to tell over breakfast.
Best avoided
Renting and subsequently crashing dodgy motorbikes in South East Asia. It's amazing how many people you meet on your travels (particularly in places like Thailand) who are nursing nasty scooter crash wounds. Take it from someone who managed to crash a motorbike in the Philippines wearing only shorts and flip flops on my gap year thus ending my diving and in fact the whole trip. You have been warned!
