Atlas Mountains
Morocco
Just 40 miles away from the ochre-coloured city of Marrakech lie the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas Mountains, towering above the desert floor
The mountains are the perfect antidote to the bustle of Marrakech, and there are an increasing number of excellent places to stay with comfortable rooms, traditional hammam steam rooms and expansive roof terraces.
Aside from acting as a chilled out ‘decompression chamber’ after hectic Marrakech, the mountains are also an excellent place for exploration. Trek with an experienced guide through walnut groves and past Berber goatherds, taking in the incredible views down valleys dotted with tiny villages.
Day trips are possible, but more adventurous souls can try an overnight trip, accompanied by a donkey laden with all the necessary food and bedding for an overnight stay in a remote village. Also possible is the beautiful ascent of Jebel Toubkal itself, which involves an overnight stay in a comfortable but basic refuge. Original Travel knows all the best kasbahs to stay in, and can arrange treks to suit every fitness - or interest - level.
