Driving Safari

Jordan

After seeing the sites of Amman, explore the King’s Highway with a knowledgeable driver or guide.

Look down across the Dead Sea from Jordan towards Jerusalem, where the golden Dome of the Rock glistens in the distance.

Also on route to Petra and Wadi Rum is the supposed baptism site of Jesus Christ, marked with a small church on the banks of the River Jordan.

Elsewhere the stunning mosaic map of the Middle East on a church floor in Madaba dates from the 6th Century AD and is definitely worth a visit.

Other things to do

Wadi Rum
Wadi Rum

Join a Bedouin guide (admirably the government insists that only local guides may be used, both here and at Petra) on a 4x4 or camel safari to see ancient rock carvings and explore the dramatic sandstone cliffs.

Floating on the Dead Sea
Floating on the Dead Sea

The lowest point on Earth lies at 1,200 feet below sea level, where the Jordan River empties into the Dead Sea.

Jerash
Jerash

One of the best preserved Roman cities in the Middle East and well worth a half day’s exploration from Amman if you have time to spare.

Petra
Petra

Petra was carved from pink sandstone cliffs by the Nabataeans some two millennia ago, and left undisturbed until its rediscovery in 1812.
