Dubai

Dubai is one of those places where weather forecasting is not the most challenging task.

Sunshine is all but guaranteed, making it a great destination for some winter sun within reasonable flying distance of the UK.

From Dubai’s state-of-the-art airport, drive 45 minutes into the desert and you come to an oasis called Bab al Shams (meaning ‘Gateway to the Sun’ in Arabic) – an atmospheric desert resort built in the style of a traditional Arabian fortress. There are a number of excellent activities on offer to give children a glimpse into desert life, and plenty of R&R potential for parents, too.

The desert experience of Bab al Shams is ideal in combination with a few days at the Royal Mirage, the most family-friendly of the beach resorts on Dubai’s gulf coast.

Beyond the hotels, ultra-modern Dubai with its spectacular skyscrapers (including the world’s tallest building) is not far away. Things to see and do include wandering through the gold and spice souqs, a visit to the beautifully restored Al Fahidi fort and getting a sense of what Dubai used to be like at the Heritage and Diving Village.
