Life is in the detail

I stayed in a traditional ger in Mongolia – the sense of space and isolation you feel is rarely found anywhere else, and the hospitality is amazing – lots of fermented mare’s milk and vodka!

My travels

Travel Things I Want To Do Before I Die

  • Watch the Northern Lights from a glass-roofed igloo in Finland - it is my lifelong dream, and what better way to see them!
  • Visit Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsunday Islands in Australia - apparently one of the most stunning beaches in the world
  • Visit an Organutan sanctuary in Borneo; I think they are such fascinating and really wonderful creatures
  • Take on the 3 week 'Gibb River Road' drive from Broome to Darwin in Northern Australia; very gruelling but they say you really get to see what the Outback truly is like, and stay in remote cattle ranching stations
  • Go to Zanzibar and stay in the underwater room at the Manta Resort - it looks like bliss!

Best Moments

  • Walking across a deserted and misty Piazza San Marco in Venice as the clock struck midnight, after a famous Bellini at Harry's Bar. It was one of the most incredible moments - we felt as though we had Venice all to ourselves!
  • Going for a midnight swim on holiday in the Hebrides and diving into the sea - to suddenly be surrounded by the incomparably beautiful twinkling bioluminescence! I have never seen it before or since, and it was magical moment - even more so as it was in Scotland!
  • Mongolia again. I spent a few weeks with a Mongolian cashmere goat-herding family. Even with an impassable language barrier (they spoke no English and I spoke no Mongolian!), I had the most incredible time - the sense of space and isolation you feel is rarely found anywhere else. Beautiful starry skies, sweeping views and long horse rides to herd the goats will stay with me forever.

Toughest Travel Moment

  • It has to be the 36-hour train from Amritsar to Mumbai in India after I had eaten something that did not agree with me! The train journeys in India can be a magical experience; chai-wallahs hawking their goods at all hours of the day and night, amazing punctuality (most of the time!) and wonderful views, but not on this particular trip!

Weirdest Travel Moment

  • Being invited to an Indian wedding in Jaipur, becoming the main attractions (sorry to the bride and groom!) and feeling very uncomfortable as hundreds of people stopped what they were doing to watch us eat our food! We left pretty soon afterwards…
