Cusco, the Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu

Peru

Cusco was the ancient capital of the Inca Empire and traditional Quechua life is still in evidence throughout the city.

These historic streets now play host to a young crowd enjoying Cusco’s recent reincarnation as Peru’s party capital and while it is undeniably full of gringos, the city still manages to retain its atmospheric charm, in no small part due to a dramatic setting.

Cusco is at an altitude of 9,000ft, and visitors can experience mild discomfort as a result of the thin air so we recommend taking it easy on arrival, particularly if embarking on rafting or other activities in the surrounding valleys, or hiking to Machu Picchu. The archaeological sites in the surrounding area are second to none. Machu Picchu will always claim the top spot - even on a global stage, and this citadel is a true phenomenon.

Between Cuzco and the lost Inca city is the Sacred Valley of the Incas, or Urubamba Valley, which shouldn’t be overlooked en route between the two. At a lower altitude than Cusco, this attractive rural region has its own superb ruins, scenic villages and colourful markets. There are also plenty of adventurous activity available, whether on board a river raft, on horseback, or by foot.

Don't take our word for it...

Great to have found a small company that values the customer, and is prepared to invest in building relationships, and does not succumb to mass tourism.

Whilst Paracas is on the coast, it is not a beach resort per-se. Certain watersports such as wind surfing are popular here, however it is also the perfect place from which to explore southern Peru. We have carefully selected a couple of the best hotels in the area in order for guests to make the most out of their stay. La Hacienda Bahia Paracas is a charming hotel ideally located on Paracas Bay, and Hotel Paracas has its own travel agent, making day trips and tours that much easier.
