Tulum
Mexico
Tulum was a site of huge importance between 1000 and 1600 AD, and something of a haven for the elite of the Mayan world.
But Tulum is far more than some ancient country club with beautiful grounds and sweeping views of the sea. There is a twenty-foot wall surrounding the site signifying the inhabitants - very real - fear of invasion.
Tulum has a number of interesting structures from the Mayan world, and a number of murals on site seem to indicate that this was - among other functions - a place of worship to the Diving God. Appropriate given this coastline has some of the finest dive sites in the world.
