Along Mexico’s vast Pacific coastline, well-known glitzy resorts such as Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco share space with smaller, more exclusive towns, villages and hotels.
The Pacific coast is generally more low-key and relaxed than either the Yucatan or the Baja California beach options, and is ideal for surfers and lovers of barefoot eco chic.
Hotels still offer superb levels of service, accommodation and, of course, setting, but they tend to be more sensitive to their environment here, and you are more likely to be sleeping in charming ‘casitas’ or small thatched houses than in an air-conditioned building.
In addition, beaches tend to be unspoilt with fewer visitors, and the fragile ecosystem well protected, meaning that this region contains some of Mexico’s most important sea turtle and bird reserves.
In the rural state of Jalisco, fields of cactus cover the arid landscape and you are likely to reach your idyllic beachfront hotel via a dusty dirt track as desert gives way to crashing waves.
