Chichén Itzá

Mexico

The ruins of Chichén Itzá are on the UNESCO World Heritage list and the site was crowned one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.

Chichén Itzá is one of the most impressive archaeological site of the Americas; certainly among the largest and best maintained sites in Mexico. It is actually two cities: one that was ruled by the Mayans during the sixth to the tenth century; the other a Toltec-Mayan city that emerged around the year 1000 A.D. Most of the prominent buildings were developed during the city’s “rebirth” under Toltec rule.

During a guided tour, visit the sites of major interest including the Temple of Kulkulkán, the ball court and the observatory.

Despite being an extremely popular tourist attraction, Chichén Itzá still maintains its grandeur and remains one of the most impressive and well restored archeological sites from the Maya Classic period. We recommend that you stay overnight at one of the nearby hotels and go to the site at first light or in the late afternoon to beat the coaches. Apart from being crowded, it will be seriously hot around midday.
