Kayaking from Paraty

Brazil

Running from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro, the Costa Verde boasts endless stretches of beautiful coastline where dense rainforests spill directly onto the beach. Hundreds of islands with unspoiled tropical wilderness lie just off shore and the best way to explore them is by kayak.

From Paraty Mirim it is less than an hour’s paddle to the opening of Saco do Mamángua, a unique tropical fjord flanked by white sandy bays, jutting boulders and sheer mountains coated in tropical rainforest.

Fishermen’s pousadas and private villas line the five mile coastline which snakes through mangrove swamps before culminating in a fresh water tributary that runs deep into the rainforest.

Paddle up the fjord and take time to stop off at different bays for sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling or a spot of lunch. Further exploration can be done on foot, trekking through the jungle to the summit of Pao do Açucar or “Sugar Loaf”. This peak stands at approximately 1,800 feet high and offers incredible views over Saco do Mamángua, Ilha Grande and on a clear day, even the islands of Angra.

A three day, two night itinerary allows enough time to explore the surroundings, before arriving at Eco Lodge, a family run pousada which offers tired kayakers a good night’s rest. The beautiful garden below the main house stretches down to the beach, and a small fresh water swimming pool provides a welcome respite from salt water. Guests eat dinner together up at the main house, and the rustic bedrooms are situated in a separate building which has a balcony lined with hammocks running along its length.
