Inland Belize
Belize
Rainforest and pine forest, abundant wildlife and Mayan sites make this an exciting and adventurous destination.
The main areas of interest are the Cayo District, Mountain Pine Ridge and Orange Walk. The 300 square mile Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback, following the extensive network of forest trails. The reserve contains diverse environments that are home to iguanas, howler monkeys, and numerous species of birds and butterflies.
The landscapes of the Cayo District range from lush rainforest to rolling farmland hills with rivers and caves dotted all over. Adventure sports abound; cave trips, biking, canoeing, horse-riding and close enough to visit Maya Sites such as Caracol, Xunantunich & Cahal Pech.
Some of the best, more remote rainforest lodges can be found in the Orange Walk district with wonderful wildlife spotting opportunities in the jungle scenery as well as on the various river excursions. The Mayan site of Lamanai is found in this region too.
