You might think that a place called The Land of Fire, and the southernmost habitable place on Earth (unless you’re an Emporer Penguin or climate scientist), might be a less than appetising place to hang out.
Well, if you’re an agoraphobic with a sense of adventure bypass, then maybe, but for anyone with even a remote interest in the great outdoors, it doesn’t get much greater than this. Welcome to the end of the world.
South America curls south-eastwards to a final tip at Tierra del Fuego, a large triangular island that is half Argentinian and half Chilean and all wild. Sitting beyond the Magellan Straits, this place is so remote that it is still frontier country.
Ushuaia, the capital, is the most southern town in the world, situated at the base of the Andes on the northern edge of the Beagle Channel. The highlights on a journey here include boat trips along the Beagle Channel, a train journey through the valleys and forests of the Tierra del Fuego National Park, boat trips to see the penguin colonies, rock climbing, sea kayaking, mountain biking, riding trips, hiking adventures and off-roading through remote and stunning landscapes. And if that wasn’t enough, Ushuaia is also the gateway to most expeditions to Antarctica.
