HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
The endless slopes of the Milky Way ski area > Hot chocolate and real Italian pizza at Pragelato Village > Ski school at the site of the 2006 Winter Olympics > Kempinski’s four restaurants > Spa treatments > Cross-country skiing

The Milky Way, according to astronomers, is a mighty big place. Not quite as big, but still more than adequate for the purposes of a family ski holiday, is the Via Lattea (‘Milky Way’) ski area – a huge network of more than 400 kilometres of pistes in the Italian Alps. Located an hour and a half’s drive from Turin, this is the area that hosted the 2006 Winter Olympics.

One of the resorts that make up the Milky Way ski area is Pragelato, home to the Kempinski Pragelato Village – a five-star resort designed in the style of an alpine village, with accommodation in a cluster of luxurious chalets.

Ski hire and a ski school are located within the resort, which is directly linked to the Milky Way ski network by a high-speed cable-car, and the normally tiresome process of sorting out ski passes is taken care of by a ‘leisure concierge’. At the heart of the resort is a spa with an indoor pool, sauna and Turkish bath. For parents worn out from trying to keep up with their kids on the slopes, a range of restorative treatments and massages is available. Other facilities include a cinema and a kids club.

As well as skiing and snowboarding, winter sports on offer include cross-country skiing, snowshoe hiking and snowmobiling. Pragelato was also the venue for the ski jumping at the 2006 Olympics, so if you fancy yourself as the next Eddie the Eagle, now’s your chance. If it’s not skiing weather, things to do beyond the resort include a visit to the extraordinary Fenestrelle Fort on nearby Mount Orsiera. This is the largest fortified building in Europe and includes a 4,000-step covered staircase.

Kempinski Pragelato’s four restaurants serve everything from pizzas and rustic mountain food to gourmet Italian cuisine, which should satisfy the healthy appetites worked up on the slopes (or that staircase). And if kids are really good, they might get to round things off with a nice Pragelato gelato…
