Austria | The Perfect Family Ski Resort
HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Superb ski tuition and nursery slopes > On-slope kindergarten & junior ski school > Floodlit toboggan run from Oberlech to Lech > Horse-drawn sleigh rides > Fondue suppers > Babysitting at the Kristiania
It’s always a bit galling when you’re skiing along in what you think is quite an accomplished style, only to be overtaken by a stream of kids wearing crash-helmets, fearlessly bombing down the pistes like colourful cannonballs. At least if they were your kids, you could take pride in the precocious little nippers.
This is where Austria’s renowned ski schools come in, and Lech has one of the most highly respected of all. The resort has good nursery slopes, and with expert tuition from the ski school’s highly qualified instructors, your kids will soon be progressing from snowplough to parallel turns and schussing. Three quarters of the remaining slopes are suitable for beginners or intermediates, and for snowboarders there’s a snowpark with special terrain and jumps.
For the youngest, the resort has a Miniclub featuring an on-slope kindergarten and a junior ski school where children can build snowmen, hone their snowball-making technique and get their first taste of skiing, leaving parents to enjoy the 260 kilometres of pistes in the Arlberg area, including the famous White Ring ski tour to nearby Zürs and back. Kids get a chance to show off their new skills at a weekly ski race.
Lech itself is a picturesque Tyrolean village which has retained much of its traditional character. Stay at the Kristiania, a family-run and family-friendly hotel founded by Othmar Schneider, who won a slalom gold medal and a downhill silver medal at the 1952 Winter Olympics. The Kristiania has a homely, chalet-style atmosphere with log fires, and is just a five-minute walk from the ski lifts. Young guests can take their pick from a selection of games and a DVD library of children’s films, while parents will appreciate the sun terrace, sauna, in-room spa service and gourmet Austrian cuisine.
Besides skiing, Lech offers plenty of other options for keeping young minds entertained, from a floodlit toboggan run to ice-skating, guided snow-shoeing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, a traditional Christmas market and watching deer being fed in the nearby forest.
