HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
African wildlife in its natural habitat > Special family accommodation at both camps > Swimming pools with stunning views > Hot-air balloon flight at Loisaba > Learning bushcraft from tribal guides > Family sleep-out on a ‘star bed’
What better place to introduce your cubs to the African bush than Kenya, the classic East African destination where safaris began? Two of the country’s best family-friendly lodges are Elsa’s Kopje and Loisaba. Both offer fantastic game viewing, a wide range of activities and special family accommodation where you won’t disturb the honeymooning couples or scare all the wildlife away.
Elsa’s Kopje is named after Elsa – the lioness made famous in the book and film Born Free. From its hilltop position, the lodge enjoys panoramic views across the plains of Meru National Park, which is home to a wider range of species than any other park in Kenya. Activities at Elsa’s include game drives (by day and night) featuring the cast from The Lion King, bush breakfasts, fishing on the Tana River and visits to a local village that will open children’s eyes to a different way of life where tribal people still lead simple, traditional lives without PlayStation.
Loisaba, perched high on the edge of the Laikipia plateau with views towards Mt. Kenya, is a 61,000-acre private reserve and working cattle ranch. Activities here include horse-riding, camel-trekking, mountain biking, quad biking, river rafting (in season) and hot-air ballooning. At the lodge itself there’s also a croquet lawn and a tennis court. Children can enjoy special activities with Samburu and Maasai guides, learning about the uses of plants, how to identify animal tracks and so on. Another special feature of Loisaba is a family sleep-out on a ‘star bed’ beneath the huge equatorial skies.
Both Elsa’s and Loisaba have ideal family accommodation set slightly apart from the main lodges, complete with dedicated staff and private swimming pools.
A safari is easily combinable with a beach holiday on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast, and save time at the beginning or end of the trip for a visit to see the baby elephants at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi. Family holiday in Africa? Hakuna matata.
