HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Kids Club > Taking the cable-car up the Teide volcano > A visit to Loro Parque for dolphin & orca displays > The massage cabins at the beach club > Exploring picturesque towns such as La Orotava and La Laguna

Sharing the same latitude as Florida and Morocco, the Canary Islands bask in an average temperature of 22°C, making them ideal for a bit of sun, sea and sand at any time of year. On the west coast of Tenerife is the Abama resort, which is extremely well geared-up for families and offers all sorts of activities to take advantage of the great climate.

The heart of the resort is built in the style of a Moorish citadel, which contains most of the rooms. Alternatively, there are villas with private swimming pools and terraces that offer greater privacy. The whole resort is interspersed with lakes and waterfalls and surrounded by subtropical gardens sloping down to a sheltered sandy beach surrounded by palm trees.

The Abama has a first-class range of facilities, including eight swimming pools, a tennis academy with seven floodlit courts, and a watersports centre offering sailing, fishing and diving to name just a few. (Local dive sites include the ‘Brain Cave’.) There is also an 18-hole golf course and golf academy with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the nearby island of La Gomera. A kids club offers a variety of other activities for younger children, from beach games and treasure hunts to limbo dancing, arts & crafts workshops and a circus hour featuring clowns, jugglers and acrobats.

For parents, facilities include massage cabins at the beach club, and a fully equipped spa. As for dining, the Abama has no fewer than ten restaurants, from Japanese and Italian, to an Argentine grill and a beach club. The flagship gastronomic restaurant is headed by a triple Michelin-starred chef.

Beyond the resort, there are several options that make for good family days out. Take the cable-car up the Teide volcano – the highest mountain in Spain – and explore the weird lunar landscapes, or take a boat trip to see the towering sea cliffs of Los Gigantes – some of the tallest in the world. Dolphin and whale-watching trips are another alternative, and in the north of the island is Loro Parque, which offers orca and dolphin displays and has a variety of other animals including giant tortoises and the largest parrot collection in the world.
