HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
The ‘Porto Pirata’ kids club – one of the best in Europe > Golf and tennis academies > Arguably the best sandy beach on the Algarve > Wide choice of restaurants including a good sushi bar

Regularly voted Portugal’s best resort, Pine Cliffs is a five-star, family-friendly resort on the Algarve coast, easily reached via Faro. The combination of the Algarve’s reliably sunny climate and Pine Cliffs’ relaxed atmosphere and excellent facilities makes this a great choice for a short-haul family destination.

Accommodation options at Pine Cliffs include the luxurious Sheraton Algarve Hotel, but families might prefer to rent one of the houses or apartments scattered around the grounds. Either way, guests have access to all of the resort’s facilities, which include a nine-hole golf course, tennis coaching on five courts (including two floodlit clay courts) and three outdoor swimming pools. An indoor pool, gym and massage treatments are available at the health club.

For keen golfers, beginner or otherwise, Pine Cliffs is ideal. As well as the nine-hole course – with its wonderful Atlantic views and famous Par 3 across a chasm in the cliffs known as the ‘Devil’s Parlour’ – there is a golf academy staffed by a team of professionals. Here you can practice your driving, pitching and putting or have your swing analysed with the help of the latest teaching technology.

A panoramic lift takes you down the cliffs to the resort’s long sandy beach – the only one in the Algarve classified with a Golden Flag by the European Union – where watersports including sailing, windsurfing, body-boarding, kayaking, waterskiing and pedalos are available.

For children, there’s one of the best kids clubs in Europe, linked to other parts of the resort by a mini-train and complete with a pirate ship playground, two pools (one for swimming, one for remote-controlled boats), an 18-hole mini-golf course and a bouncy castle. For older children, there’s also a juniors club offering activities such as football, volleyball, basketball and archery. Things to do beyond the resort include exploring the nearby town of Albufeira.

At mealtimes, Pine Cliffs leaves you spoiled for choice, with a dozen options ranging from a beach bar to gourmet restaurants. The rented apartments are also equipped for self-catering.
