Once a favourite base for British pirates preying on Spanish treasure ships, Jamaica still provides safe haven for buccaneers, as long they’re under 12 and leave their cutlasses at home.

Round Hill, half an hour from Montego Bay in the northwest of the island, is the perfect place to drop anchor for family beach holiday in the Caribbean. The resort occupies a 98-acre peninsula that used to be part of a pineapple, spice and coconut plantation, and overlooks a crescent-shaped bay with a private beach lapped by safe, shallow waters.

For accommodation, you can choose between the small Pineapple House Hotel, located next to the beach and the resort’s main swimming pool, or families might prefer one of the 27 villas dotted around the hillsides, many of which have their own private gardens and pools. Villas also come with a housekeeper who prepares breakfast, and golf carts are provided for getting around the resort.

Round Hill has a fully-equipped watersports centre and its protected waters are ideal for learning to water-ski, scuba dive, windsurf or sail. There are pedalos, a glass-bottomed boat, and yacht charters, fishing and snorkelling trips to the coral reefs are available from the resort’s private pier.

For landlubbers there are five tennis courts (with a resident pro to provide coaching) and the excellent Pineapple Kids Club that runs a wide range of activities from nature walks and donkey rides to arts & crafts and reggae lessons. Dem parents also have it good, with an excellent restaurant, a renowned spa and massages available in your room or villa. In the evenings, entertainment includes bonfire-lit barbecues on the beach, accompanied by calypso music and a steel band.

The resort can also organise a variety of excursions, including a boat ride along the Black River to explore mangrove swamps and see birds and crocodiles, a trip to the cascading Dunns River Falls, horse riding and tours of working plantations.

If kids don’t have a good time at Round Hill, mum & dad can walk the plank.
