HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Kids club for ages 3-12 > Learning to scuba dive or waterski > The pink sand beaches of the Maddalena Islands, created by ground up coral > An evening stroll around the marina in Porto Cervo > Relaxing on the beach at the Romazzino

Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda is renowned as a summer playground for adults, but while undoubtedly being a destination that appeals to grown up kids, it’s also pretty ideal for actual kids.

Not many of the hotels on this exclusive and chic stretch of coastline are family-friendly, but one exception is the Hotel Romazzino, just six miles from Porto Cervo. Its whitewashed buildings sit in gardens that lead down to a beautiful and private sandy beach.

Facilities include a lagoon-style sea-water swimming pool, a tennis court and a watersports centre offering waterskiing, scuba diving, kayaking and windsurfing. There is also a good golf course nearby. Additional facilities for children include a kids club for ages 3-12, a playground and a babysitting service. The Romazzino has an excellent restaurant, with children’s menus available, and barbecues are held by the beach. Alternatively, the car-free streets of nearby Porto Cervo are packed with good restaurants.

Beyond the hotel, there are miles of beautiful coastline to explore. You can hire a boat from the hotel’s jetty and visit the weird rock formations at Capo Testa or stop off to swim or snorkel in the famously translucent green waters to be found in dozens of secluded coves. Slightly further afield, just off the north-east coast, are the islands of the Maddalena Archipelago, where Garibaldi once lived (that’s right – the one the ‘squashed fly’ biscuits are named after). Here you can enjoy a picnic lunch on a deserted pink sand beach and go diving on the wrecks of old Roman cargo ships.

The Romazzino also offers a car rental service for exploring the island. The wild, mountainous interior of Sardinia, with its rustic landscapes and traditional villages, is well worth visiting.
