If you’re looking for a first-class family-oriented beach resort in the Med with every conceivable activity for children, look no further than Halkidiki. It even has ‘kid’ in the title. Located on the Greek mainland in the northern Aegean, Halkidiki is easily recognisable on a map by the trident-like peninsulas that jut into the sea. The westernmost of these is called the Kassandra Peninsula, and it is here that the Sani Resort is to be found.

Set on a 1,000-acre private estate, the resort comprises pine forests, a private marina, seven kilometres of sandy beaches and four hotels. The two best hotels are Porto Sani Village, located next to the marina at the heart of the resort, and the Sani Asterias Suites, a cluster of luxurious villas by the shore.

The whole resort is like a self-contained world that has everything you could possibly require from a family beach holiday and plenty more besides. As well as swimming pools and beaches with shallow, child-friendly waters, facilities include two watersports centres, a diving centre with PADI instructors, a mountain-biking centre and eight tennis courts (some floodlit) with professional coaching available.

Each hotel has an entertainment team that organizes a huge range of sports and other activities – everything from archery and beach volleyball to waterskiing, windsurfing, sailing and pedaloes. There’s a crèche for children aged 6 months–4 years, a kids club for those aged 4-12, and a teenagers club for 13-16 year-olds. Guests of Porto Sani Village and Sani Asterias Suites also have use of a private beach with a ‘Babe Watch’ babysitting service.

For dining, there are no fewer than 16 options to choose from, ranging from gourmet restaurants to traditional tavernas and cafés. Other facilities include an open-air cinema and a programme of evening entertainment with high quality stage shows for the whole family. Excursions to Mount Athos or traditional markets and villages can also be arranged.

Parents need not feel neglected – they can enjoy spa treatments or relax on the beach and enjoy the beach bar service while kids gaze across the Gulf of Salonica to distant Mount Olympus for inspiration before attempting that most traditional of Olympic events – the banana boat.
