Dubai | Dubai Desert Oasis
HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Sinbad’s Kids Club from 5 to 12 at Bab al Sham > A camel safari into the desert > A trip to the Wild Wadi waterpark > All but guaranteed good weather > The spa & infinity pool at Bab al Shams with its desert views
Dubai is one of those places where weather forecasting is not the most challenging task. Sunshine is all but guaranteed, making it a great destination for some winter sun within reasonable flying distance of the UK.
From Dubai’s state-of-the-art airport, drive 45 minutes into the desert and you come to an oasis called Bab al Shams (meaning ‘Gateway to the Sun’ in Arabic) – an atmospheric desert resort built in the style of a traditional Arabian fortress.
Bab al Shams’ excellent facilities include a large infinity pool with stunning desert views, a separate shaded children's pool, a refreshing ‘rain room’ and a spa offering a variety of massages and treatments. The resort’s restaurants include a pizzeria and, in the evenings, an open-air Bedouin encampment-style restaurant serving traditional Arabic food by a roaring fire. Entertainment in the form of belly dancers, henna painters and live music accompanies meals here.
There’s no shortage of activities to choose from to fill the days: try your hand at archery, watch falconry displays, ride genuine Arabian horses or go on a camel safari into the desert. 4WD excursions into the dunes, wadis and the Hajar Mountains are also available. A croquet lawn, mini golf and table tennis are among the other options, while Sinbad’s Kids Club provides a programme of activities for children, including arts & crafts, nature trails and swimming games.
Beyond the resort, ultra-modern Dubai with its spectacular skyscrapers (including the world’s tallest building) is not far away. Things to see and do include wandering through the gold and spice souqs, a visit to the beautifully restored Al Fahidi fort and getting a sense of what Dubai used to be like at the Heritage and Diving Village. Last but not least, the rides and slides of the superb Wild Wadi waterpark are guaranteed to be a hit.
The desert experience of Bab al Shams is ideal in combination with a few days at the Royal Mirage, the most family-friendly of the beach resorts on Dubai’s gulf coast.
