HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Beautiful sandy beach > Kids club from 6 months to 12 yrs old > An eco-adventure tour of Antigua’s coastline > The mini-tennis and ‘jungle gym’ at Carlisle Bay’s Cool Kids Club > Snorkelling on the two-mile long reef just offshore from Carlisle Bay

Horatio Nelson was a great naval commander, but perhaps lacked a good eye (no pun intended) for a holiday destination. As a young captain in charge of the Squadron of the Leeward Islands, he was stationed at Antigua for a while, but preferred to spend most of his time on his ship, describing the island as a "dreadful hole."

To be fair, in his day there weren’t idyllic beach resorts like Carlisle Bay to stay at. Set on a sweeping bay on the unspoilt south coast of Antigua, with a backdrop of rolling hills and lush tropical rainforest, this family-friendly resort is generally reckoned to be among the best in the Caribbean.

As well as its beautiful sandy beach, Carlisle Bay offers a range of watersports, with professional instruction available for windsurfing and sailing (Antigua is particularly good for these sports because of its reliable breezes). Also available are kayaking, kite-surfing, fishing, boat charters, snorkelling trips to the nearby reefs and a PADI-certified scuba diving centre.

On land, facilities include nine tennis courts (four of which are floodlit), a stunning freeform swimming pool and a spa. For children, there’s a kids club located in the hotel's tropical gardens, with a ‘jungle gym’, sandpit, paddling pool and four mini tennis courts. The resort’s luxurious private cinema also shows children's movies daily.

Beyond the resort, there’s a variety of interesting excursions to choose from: a rainforest canopy tour, using a network of suspension bridges, for a fascinating insight to life amongst the treetops, or an eco-tour of Antigua’s coastline involving beachcombing, exploring mangrove forests and reefs, and discovering the island’s wildlife, from turtles and sting rays to the pelicans and West Indian whistling ducks of Bird Island.

Other possibilities include trips to the historic Nelson’s Dockyard and English Harbour, day trips to other islands and helicopter tours to nearby Montserrat to see its active volcano up close.
