Oman may not immediately spring to mind when thinking of good family destinations, but it certainly deserves to. This unspoilt corner of the Arabian Peninsula offers a great combination of beach holiday and desert adventure.
Starting off with the beach part, the Barr al Jissah resort, set on a private bay just outside Muscat, is the best place for families. Its excellent facilities include sandy beaches, a full range of watersports (including a dive school), tennis courts, a children’s pool and a ‘lazy river’ waterslide running through the resort. For parents, there’s Oman’s largest spa and a wide choice of good restaurants.
Barr al Jissah has a Little Turtles Kids Club for younger children, offering a variety of indoor and outdoor games, and a Teens Club that organises activities such as beach volleyball and beach football. Dolphin and whale-watching trips are available from the resort’s jetty, and located within the resort there’s also an Omani Heritage Village where you can see Arabian horses and admire traditional crafts such as henna painting.
After a few days by the sea, get a change of scene on a privately guided 4WD safari into the interior, taking in beautiful mountain panoramas, oasis villages and fantastic medieval forts that look just how forts should. Driving on to the desert known as the Wahiba Sands, you can ride camels across the dunes and spend the night at a genuine Bedouin tented camp.
After a sleep-out under the stars, head back towards the coast via wadis where you can cool off with a refreshing swim in natural freshwater pools. Heading back to the coast, you can take a boat trip on a traditional dhow, go snorkelling off deserted beaches and, at certain times of year, watch turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs or new hatchlings making their way down to the surf by moonlight.
Not bad, Sinbad.
