Italy | Family summer in the mountains
HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Spectacular natural playground > Nature trails, mountain huts and wildflowers > Italian family hospitality > Spa facilities > Award-winning cuisine > Hiking, climbing, mountain biking
It's a common British misconception that Europe's resorts go into mothballs at the end of the ski season; yet our Continental cousins have long known that the mountains make a wonderful alternative to the beach during the summer holidays, particularly for families.
South of the Alps, the northern Italian landscape of the Veneto region is dominated by the Dolomites range, a popular ski destination in winter, and a spectacular adventure playground in the summer.
After the snow melts, the landscape reveals lush green valley pastures and thick forests dotted with carpets of wildflowers, remote mountain huts and isolated villages, all set against a backdrop of the towering Dolomiti peaks.
The Rosa Alpina Hotel & Spa, located in the mountain village of San Cassiano, makes the perfect family base. New for 2008, the hotel has launched a Kids Programme; five days’ worth of imaginative outdoors (and indoors in the unlikely event of poor weather) fun and games revolving around the natural highlights of the region.
Your knee-high Heidis and Peters will be taken off skipping through fields of flowers, fossil-hunting, orienteering, swimming, picnicking, and will even have a morning’s Italian cookery class with the Rosa Alpina’s Michelin-starred chefs.
The hotel has the warm atmosphere of a chic alpine lodge, with décor focusing on natural materials such as wood and linen, an excellent spa, and two restaurants; one with two Michelin stars and the other more informal and serving wood-oven pizzas and homemade pasta dishes. The Pizzinini family provides the charming Italian welcome, and parents and children alike can choose from endless invigorating ways to pass the idyllic sunny days; ensuring that the whole family will go home refreshed.
This surrounding region, known as Alta Badia, offers a huge array of summer activities for all ages. Mountain biking or trekking are ideal ways to explore the countryside and there are a wide range of routes to suit cyclists of all abilities and plenty of mountain restaurants to stop at for long leisurely lunches. There is a 9-hole golf course in nearby Corvara, with a backdrop so breathtaking that any wayward shots will go unnoticed.
For the more intrepid parents, the vie ferrate are a must. These mountain walkways are equipped with fixed cables, ladders, and bridges, and do require technical equipment, while those adrenaline-seekers can also head off climbing and paragliding, safe in the knowledge that the kids are having an equally exciting – if less vertigo-inducing - day.
