Wilderness Cabins
There are a number of private cabins dotted about the wilderness around Jukkasjarvi, and they differ in size and shape with a few constants - none have electricity or running water, all are near a lake, and all have outside loos.
Don’t let this put you off – it’s merely the most practical way to maintain life in sub-zero conditions, and all part of the experience. In an environment where any water would freeze instantly, showers and running water are impossible, so when you arrive each afternoon at a cabin, you and/or the guide will need to collect water from the lake (through a hole in the ice), and light a fire to warm the place up.
Next, the dogs need feeding and bedding down in the kennels outside and then it’s time for a traditional Swedish sauna to relax and wash after the day’s exertions. Accommodation is in a dormitory-style bunk-room, which you take privately, and only the guide stays in the cabin with you, but sleeps in another room.
Finally, the loo. They are normally a short walk away from the cabin, and so best avoided of a cold, dark night. This is very much a bush loo, but the best available in a place where there is no running water.
All in all, the relative ‘hardship’ of the cabin accommodation is far outweighed by the experience of leading your team of dogs through such a beautiful landscape and staying in such a remote place, but if you want more information please do ask.
