Tenerife Carnival
Spain
One of the more bonkers events you will ever go to, but an excellent weekend away.
Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, sees several hundred thousand people on the streets – and almost all of them in costume. Although the exact date varies, the carnival takes place in spring, around February to March time. For a seemingly endless round of parties and processions up until Ash Wednesday and the Burial of the Sardine (don’t ask) parade. That’s meant to signal the end of the fun and games, but come Friday and Saturday night, it all kicks off again, and the streets are jam-packed with revellers, mobile discos and drinks stands.
So, if you want to let your hair down in the midst of a melee of men in drag and dedicated party animals (not necessarily mutually exclusive) then this is the place for you.
