Venice
Italy
Experience this inimitable city from a fresh angle by staying at one of Original Travel's carefully selected properties
Although Venice is a year-round city-break destination, the best time to visit is autumn, when the temperature has dropped and the hordes of tourists are long gone. The city has a far more relaxed feel in autumn, making sightseeing a pleasure rather than a struggle.
Drifting along some of her 150 canals, beneath some of her 400 bridges, the magnificence of the 16th- and 17th-century palaces and piazzas becomes apparent.
Sights not to be missed include the Accademia gallery with its works by Bellini, Titian, Tintoretto and Canaletto, and the opulent Byzantine masterpiece of St Mark’s Basilica, while those with enough energy should climb the Campanile and enjoy the spectacle of St Mark’s Square below. Just to walk along the secret alleyways crossing the Bridge of Sighs or the Rialto is an experience that will live long in the memory.
A boat trip out to the islands of Murano and Burano is also very worthwhile, providing welcome respite from the bustle of the city centre.
Last but not least, Venice offers some great dining experiences. Enjoy eating al fresco within sight of the Rialto bridge or at Harry’s on St Mark’s Square.
